When to See a Chiropractor for Neck Pain

Ever have a tough day like this? You wake up with a stiff neck. Later, you turn your head while driving and feel a little discomfort. By the end of the day, you’re sitting on your couch with a literal pain in the neck. What should you do? Pop a pain pill or go see a chiropractor for neck pain?

There are many reasons you might have neck pain. You could have injured yourself. But unfortunately, neck injuries don’t always result in pain right away. It can show up days, weeks, or even months later. Other causes include age, arthritis, and day-to-day life.

Know When to Visit Your Chiropractor

You can often try some remedies at home for neck pain first. Pain is often caused by inflammation. A cold compress or ice pack can help. Neck exercises can loosen up stiff muscles. Try looking up and down and left and right. Giving attention to your sleeping position might offer relief.

If home therapy doesn’t work, your pain gets worse, or you suspect your pain was caused by any of the following, see your chiropractor soon. And if you can’t look left or right without severe pain or you’re anxious about it, book your first visit to your chiropractor immediately!

Injury or Accident.

If you feel neck pain after an accident, you should see your chiropractor. Whether you experienced trauma from contact or whiplash, there can be hidden joint, disc, ligament, muscle, or nerve damage. Tightening and contraction might have caused muscle fatigue.

Degenerative Disorder.

The neck is not immune to the effects of aging. As we get older, everything from wear and tear to osteoarthritis to degenerative disc disease can wreak havoc on the neck. Causes like bone spurs and cartilage deterioration affect motion and can result in neck pain.

Spinal Stenosis.

If you notice any numbness or weakness in your neck, don’t try to treat the pain on your own. Spinal stenosis causes the small nerve passageways in the vertebrae to narrow. This results in compression and trapping of the nerve roots. Don’t toy with possible nerve damage.

Some other causes of neck pain include:

  • Tech neck (looking down at your phone/tablet)

  • Poor ergonomics at work

  • Muscle spasms and strains

  • Disc herniations and bulges

  • Cervical radiculopathy (pinched nerves)

Don’t Delay Seeing Your Chiropractor for Neck Pain

If your neck pain doesn’t seem to be improving within a day or two, it’s better to get it checked out than to keep waiting. When you try home remedies, and your neck pain is worse the next morning, there are likely underlying issues. Don’t wait for the pain to go away on its own.

Sometimes those suffering from neck pain will rely on over-the-counter drugs to get through the day. But pain relievers only mask the root cause. And as you increase dosage and frequency, you hide worsening conditions. It’s better to see your chiropractor for neck pain instead of popping pills.
